CHRISTUS Health promotes diabetes awareness, prevention and support

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

11/12/2025

With more than one in seven American adults living with diabetes, CHRISTUS Health is highlighting awareness, prevention and support, all part of National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to spotlight one of the most pressing chronic health conditions in the United States.

Nearly 16% of Americans are currently living with diabetes, a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly one in four of those individuals are unaware of their condition.

“Diabetes is not a one-size-fits-all condition,” said Marie Simpson, diabetes educator for CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System. “Even with the best intentions, patients can struggle to maintain stable blood sugar levels. That’s why education, empathy and personalized care are so critical.”

The economic impact of diabetes is staggering, with annual costs exceeding $412 billion, including direct medical expenses and lost productivity according to the American Diabetes Association.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95% of all diagnosed cases and is largely preventable through lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular physical activity and weight management.

CHRISTUS Health encourages the following for the prevention and management of diabetes:

  • Get screened early: Adults over 35 should be screened every three years, especially if they have risk factors such as obesity or family history.
  • Eat balanced meals: Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables and healthy fats.
  • Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
  • Monitor your numbers: Regular blood sugar checks can help catch issues early.
  • Seek support. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral or contact the Diabetes Care & Education Specialists and the Registered Dietitians at the Healthy Learning Center.

On Thursday, CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System will host a community health fair on the hospital campus. This event is open to the public and aims to raise awareness, promote early detection and connect individuals with resources for managing diabetes and other chronic conditions.

The event will offer:

  • Free blood glucose and blood pressure screenings.
  • Health education highlighting other hospital services.
  • A potential open house for the Healthy Learning Center
  • A preview of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, pending completion
